Why doesn’t ChatGPT recommend my business?

You asked ChatGPT for a business like yours in your town, and it named someone else. That is frustrating, but it is rarely a mystery. There is usually a plain reason, and most of them can be fixed with honest, everyday housekeeping.

First, how AI assistants pick names

When someone asks an AI assistant for a recommendation, it either answers from what it learned during training, or it searches the web first and summarises what it finds. Either way, it can only name businesses it has found clear, consistent information about.

Nobody outside the AI companies knows exactly how each assistant weighs things, and it changes. But the reasons below come up again and again when a local business is left out.

Nine common reasons you are left out

  • It cannot find much about you. A business with no website, a half-finished Google profile and few reviews gives an assistant very little to work with.
  • It is not clear what you do or where. If your website says "all aspects of building work" and never names a town, it is hard to match you to "extension builder in Stamford".
  • Your details do not match. An old address on one directory, a different phone number on Facebook and a slightly different name on Google make it harder to be sure who you are.
  • Your competitors have more, and more detailed, reviews. Reviews that mention the job and the place give an assistant specific things to say.
  • Your website hides its text. Prices in a PDF, services listed only in images, or a setting that blocks AI crawlers can all mean the words never get read.
  • The question was different from the one you expected. "Emergency plumber open now" and "bathroom fitter" can bring up different names. Answers also vary from one ask to the next.
  • You are new, or you changed your name. It can take a while before new information is picked up, and old names can linger.
  • The assistant did not search. Without a web search, an answer can rely on older information, which may not include you.
  • Others are mentioned in more places. Local news, community groups, trade associations and suppliers’ websites all mention businesses, and those mentions add up.

How to tell which reason applies to you

Ask the same few customer-style questions several times, on different days, in ChatGPT and in Google’s Gemini. Write down who is named. Then look at their Google profile and website next to yours. The gap is usually obvious: they list the exact service, they name the town, they have recent reviews that mention the job.

Our step-by-step answer on how to check if ChatGPT recommends your business explains how to do this properly, so one odd answer does not send you in the wrong direction.

What to fix first

  • Complete your Google Business Profile: the right category, every service, the areas you really cover, accurate hours.
  • Give each main service its own page on your website, saying where you work, in plain text.
  • Make your name, address or area, and phone number the same everywhere.
  • Ask every happy customer for a review that mentions the job and the place.
  • Check with whoever runs your website that AI and search crawlers are not blocked.

What it is not

It is not a penalty, and nobody is paying the AI to leave you out. You cannot buy a place in the answer either. That is why we never guarantee a recommendation: we check, fix what is likely holding you back, and measure again the same way.

Questions

ChatGPT named a business that closed years ago. Why?

If the assistant did not search the web for that answer, it may have relied on older information. Making sure your own current details are clear and consistent gives it something better to find when it does search.

Does Google Ads or SEO spend make a difference?

Paying for Google Ads does not put you in an AI assistant’s answer. Good SEO work overlaps a lot with what helps, because clear pages and accurate listings help both.

How quickly will things change after I fix them?

There is no fixed timescale, and nobody can promise one. Some changes may be picked up sooner than others. Re-check monthly, asking the same questions the same way.

Can you check this for me?

Yes. Our free check asks ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini the kind of questions your customers ask and emails you, in plain English, whether you were named and who was named instead.
