Answer
How do I check if ChatGPT recommends my business?
Short answer
Ask ChatGPT the questions a real customer would ask, in their words, with your trade and town, and see whether your business is named. Ask each question several times on different days, and in other assistants such as Google’s Gemini, because answers vary. Write down who is named instead: that tells you who to compare yourself with.

Step by step
Write five customer questions
Use the words customers use on the phone, with your town: "who is a good electrician in Oakham?", "who can fit a boiler near me this week?". Mix urgent jobs with planned ones.
Start a fresh chat
Use a new chat, or ChatGPT’s temporary chat, so your earlier conversations do not steer the answer. If the assistant asks where you are, give the town as a customer would.
Ask, and note who is named
For each question, write down every business named, in order, and anything the answer says about them.
Repeat on different days
Ask each question three times, on different days. One answer on its own tells you very little.
Try another assistant
Ask the same questions in Google’s Gemini, and others your customers might use, such as Perplexity or Microsoft Copilot.
Keep a simple table
Columns: date, assistant, question, were you named (yes or no), who was named instead. Re-check monthly, the same way.
The honest limits
This gives you a snapshot, not a ranking. Answers change from one ask to the next, and they can depend on the person asking, their location and settings. Use it to spot patterns over time, not to judge a single result.

Why do I get a different answer each time?
AI assistants generate each answer fresh, and when they search the web, the results can differ too. That is normal, and it is why one answer proves very little.
ChatGPT named me when I asked. Is that enough?
It is a good sign. Ask in a fresh chat, without your business name in the question, and on different days. If you are still named regularly, you are in a good place.
Can someone do this for me?
Yes. Our free check asks ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini a handful of customer-style questions about your trade and area and emails you the results in plain English. Our paid audit goes much further.
