Comparison
AI visibility vs SEO: what’s the difference for a local business?
SEO (search engine optimisation) is about appearing in the list of links when someone searches Google. AI visibility is about being named when someone asks an AI assistant for a recommendation. They overlap a lot, but they are measured differently, and a business can do well in one and be missing from the other.

SEO and AI visibility side by side
| Topic | SEO (search results) | AI visibility (AI answers) |
|---|---|---|
| What the customer sees | A list of links, maps and ads to choose from | A short written answer that names a few businesses |
| What "doing well" means | Ranking near the top for the searches that matter | Being named, and described accurately, when people ask |
| How you check | Search Console, rank checks, visits from Google | Asking real customer questions, several times, in more than one assistant |
| Can you pay to appear? | Yes, as a labelled ad, alongside the free results | No, you cannot buy a place inside an AI’s answer |
| What helps both | Clear service pages, accurate listings, real reviews, a fast, readable website | The same |
Where they overlap
Most of the groundwork is shared. A complete Google Business Profile, a page for each service that names the area you cover, consistent contact details and genuine reviews help you in Google’s results and give AI assistants clear facts to work with. If your SEO is in good shape, you are not starting from zero.
Where they differ
A search results page shows ten or more options. An AI answer often names two or three, so being "nearly there" counts for less. AI answers also vary from one ask to the next, which is why a single screenshot proves very little. And an assistant may describe you, not just link to you, so wrong or out-of-date details matter more.
Some things matter more for AI answers than people expect: whether your website text can actually be read (not hidden in images or PDFs), whether AI crawlers are allowed in, and whether other sites mention you in plain words.
Which should a small business start with?
Start with the shared basics, because they help both. Then check where you actually stand in AI answers, rather than assuming your Google ranking tells you. Our free check does exactly that for ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini.
Want to know where you stand?
Our free check asks ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini the kind of questions your customers ask and emails you, in plain English, whether you were named and who was named instead. Four tiny steps; your details come last.
Step 1 of 4: Your trade
If you want more, every service has a fixed price.
Questions
Is AI visibility the same as GEO?
GEO (generative engine optimisation) is another name for the same idea: helping AI assistants find and describe you accurately. You will also see "AEO" (answer engine optimisation). The words differ; the groundwork is much the same.
Do I need to stop doing SEO?
No. Good SEO work helps with AI answers too. Treat AI visibility as an extra thing to check, not a replacement.
Does ranking first on Google mean AI will recommend me?
Not necessarily. It helps, but AI assistants make their own choices and may name different businesses. The only way to know is to check.
